John 14:22-31 | What's a lesson for the original audience?

The lesson for the original audience comes out of the question that Judas is asking.

"Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?"
-John 14:22

The response is two-fold to this. Jesus will be made manifest in their love, and Jesus will be made manifest by the Holy Spirit who is to be given to them. This provokes the desire to walk in love and to bear the Spirit within them. It is out of this that Jesus then encourages them. In saying that He is giving them the Holy Spirit, He also says He gives them peace. He encourages them not to be troubled nor be afraid. But these things again are stated in Jesus sending the Holy Spirit.

I see a very critical element at play here. The Holy Spirit is absolutely necessary for the believer to be uplifted and encouraged. The Holy Spirit is absolutely necessary for peace in the believer. As Jesus prepares to depart, He prepares the disciples with the encouragement that the Holy Spirit will be with them. As we know, we don't see the fulness of that until after Jesus ascends in Acts. Interestingly enough, it is in that moment that we see the Church united and having Jesus' peace.

The goal of Jesus appears to be encouragement and stirring up desire for the Holy Spirit and for love. And so I see the lesson as being the same.

What lesson do you see?
