Proverbs 29:8
8Scoffers set a city aflame,
But wise men turn away wrath.
-Proverbs 29:8
It is wisdom to understand the power that our words possess. For ourselves, James speaks of it as a rudder. Our speech can direct where we are turning and how we are getting to where we are going. Our speech is highlighted also as a symptom of the condition of our hearts. Beyond ourselves, our speech has the incredible ability to influence the world around us. Scoffing, mockery, gossip and slander brings destruction in its wake. Alternatively, a gentle answer is sufficient to turn away wrath. Wise men utilize speech as a tool while the foolish man plays with it like playing with fire. A whole city may be burned up by a simple careless act. Take into account how you use your speech. Is it edifying? Does it glorify the Lord? Or are you careless with it? Take this before the Lord and seek that you may be found in Him.
