John 18:12-40 | What am I going to do about it?

Having continued to reflect on this passage, all the more I desire to look upon Jesus example of suffering. We have so many media interpretations of what suffering looks like and how to suffer well. Jesus trumps all of them. In His suffering, He was not self-seeking. The contrast is that Peter was concerned entirely for himself. Let's look at what James says concerning self-seeking.

14 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. 16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.
-James 3:14-16

The intent of Jesus was to obey the will of the Father. We know from Hebrews 12 that it was for the joy set before Him that He endured the cross. He had an eternal perspective. He had a heavenly perspective. His concern was the Lord and others. This is a drastic contrast from Peter who was concerned for himself. The application hits me between the eyes. Which one will I be? We know that we are transformed by the renewing of our mind and that renewing comes by the washing of water by the word. If I am to be like Christ, I need to look unto the example of Jesus.

5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
-Philippians 2:5-11

In light of this, I will be making a commitment of reading the gospels and acquainting myself with His sufferings. I will be looking into His character in depth and in reflection of my own. As Peter really came to know Jesus, he was able to share in Christ's sufferings.

What application are you implementing?
