John 18:1-11 | What's the lesson for me today?

11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?”
-John 18:11

The fact that there is a time and a season for everything under the sun is a frequent thought of mine. In conjunction to that I have thought, well what determines when it is the right season for a thing? In our own lives it can be difficult to discern. How did Jesus discern? How did He know the times it wasn't supposed to be His hour? How did He know this was it? The verse above tells us exactly what that is. The discernment came from the Father.

An interesting note on this is He didn't see the suffering He was about to partake as the result of sinful men's actions. He saw it as a cup the Father had given Him. He heeded the voice of the Father that led Him to the cross. As we talked about the security of the relationship between the Father and the Son last week, I think back on it again here. As the Father leads, the Son follows. As the Father instructs, the Son listens. This is a model set for us that we would do well to heed. It is one that I would do well to heed. Jesus was not concerned with His own life. He was concerned for His disciples and for the Father's will. I pray that the same would be true for all of us.

What lesson are you taking away from today's scripture?
