John 18:1-11 | What's the connection?

4 Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.”
-John 2:4

You might be thinking to yourself, "Wow. What a deep verse to start off today's devotion with. I really needed that." If that is what you thought, you are on the right track. Through the Gospel of John, there has been a language that has developed throughout and it begins in this verse. This is the first instance in John that Jesus eludes to "His hour". We have touched on it throughout these devotions but have held off on commenting to any depth until now. For it is here in John 18 that His hour had finally come.

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
-John 1:29

John the Baptist had recognized quickly who Jesus was and the role He would play. Jesus is the Lamb that would be offered for our sins, thus removing them. We have now arrived to the point that the Lamb is about to be inspected. More on that next week. The main connection to be made here is that Jesus is finally brought in. He had eluded capture many times before, and had it not been His time here, He could have eluded capture again. Instead, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane where Judas knew He would be. He gave Himself over freely.

We see no battle from Jesus. In fact, we see Him rebuke the resistance Peter brings. When Jesus' hour had come, we can see from start to finish how He truly laid His life down for us. He knew what was coming but...

Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
-Hebrews 12:2b
