John 16:1-15 | What's the lesson for me today?

A question continues to press on me as I have gone through these recent passages, and it is this: Do I trust in the Holy Spirit? There are a lot of things I find that I rely on myself for. When it comes to dealing with trial, tribulation, or persecution, I am quick to consider myself in the midst of that. I am quick to think of what I may have done wrong. And then I fear the possibility that I may not be going in the direction of truth because of it. Once again, however, we see the Holy Spirit fulfilling an important role in the believer.

Jesus took upon a critical role in the lives of the disciples. That role was to guide them into truth. As Jesus departs, He is sending the Spirit of truth. The role the Spirit of truth is playing is to guide us into all truth. In other words, we can trust that the Holy Spirit will not lead us astray. If I am honest, I think many people don't actually believe this. There is an air of doubt concerning the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Francis Chan writes a book called Forgotten God to specifically address this issue. Do we really believe in the Holy Spirit's work in our lives?

When recognizing the role the Holy Spirit plays, it allows for us to enter that rest talked about in Hebrews 4. We are not so concerned with all of our efforts and making sure we are taking the right path. Instead, we defer to God the Holy Spirit. He is the One who should be leading us. Many of us may claim to be Spirit-filled believers, but can we say we are Spirit-led believers? This is my prayer for myself.

What lesson are you taking away?
