Psalm 107:10-16
10Those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
Bound in affliction and irons—
11Because they rebelled against the words of God,
And despised the counsel of the Most High,
12Therefore He brought down their heart with labor;
They fell down, and there was none to help.
13Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He saved them out of their distresses.
14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
And broke their chains in pieces.
15Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
16For He has broken the gates of bronze,
And cut the bars of iron in two.
-Psalm 107:10-16
There is a trend of belief that I have seen rise up more and more in recent years. The idea is that because I am in Jesus, there are no consequences for any actions I have taken or will take. While it is true that we have been freed from the ultimate penalty of sin, I do not believe that is an elimination of all consequence that follows sin. If a man cheats on his wife, there are consequences physically, mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually. If a man murders, there are hosts of consequences. If one is indulging in substance, gluttony, or another, there are physical consequences.
Rebelling against the Lord bears its consequences as well. Despising His counsel is a quick path to foolishness. Even amidst the consequences of rebelling to the Lord, still God's mercy is extended. He swiftly brings them forth from their darkness and releases them from that bondage. So the Lord has done with all of us upon salvation. Rejoice in the Lord! Celebrate Him and celebrate the swift salvation He has given you.
