John 19 | What's the connection?

In this context, it is difficult to exactly explain what the connection would be. This is the very thing all points in Scripture connect too. In a broad stroke, one might answer that the connection is the very word of God in totality. This is the substance that casts the shadow of things to come in the Old Testament. It is the thing the New Testament is written in light of. This is the point that we are united to in our own death to self.

We see all throughout the chapter the words, "that the Scripture might be fulfilled..." The section fulfills multiple points of Scripture in one fell swoop. We see fulfillment of the Passover as our Passover Lamb is killed for us that death might pass over the believer. We see the fulfillment of passages like Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53. We see the rise of the last Adam that tore down the separation that was made so that we may have access to the Tree of Life once again. He became that very tree of life for us in this moment. We see the life in the blood giving us new life. Let us not fail to mention the very Scriptures John refers to here.

The point of connection may very well be summed up by the final statement given on the cross, "It is finished!" I haven't even scratched the surface of connections found in this passage. As such, I want you to explore the passage yourself. What connections do you see in John 19?
