Psalm 90:9-12

9For all our days have passed away in Your wrath;
We finish our years like a sigh.
10The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years,
Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow;
For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
11Who knows the power of Your anger?
For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.
12So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.
-Psalm 90:9-12

When you go to a gravesite and you examine the various tombstones, they are all very similar in their content. They will state the name and maybe something about the individual and then a date followed by another date. That would be the date they were born, and the date they died. In between these two dates is a little dash that summarizes the entirety of their lives. We all have a birthdate and all may have a death date unless the Lord returns before then. In any case we have a date in which our time on this earth has expired. The question then remains, what will you do to invest in that dash?

What are you going to do with the time that you have here? It is wisdom to number our days or to recognize that our time here is limited. It is a foolish thing in youthfulness to ignore the idea of our own mortality. We know for a fact that our culture has not considered such a concept based on the extreme panic surrounding Covid. For the first time, many were faced with the idea of their own mortality and they ran and fled, seeking how they may avoid such a fate. We know that we cannot escape it on our own doing, so what matters is what we do with this time here and now. Learn to number your days. Be starkly aware of your own mortality and live, therefore, in wisdom.
