Psalm 89:46-52
46How long, Lord?
Will You hide Yourself forever?
Will Your wrath burn like fire?
47Remember how short my time is;
For what futility have You created all the children of men?
48What man can live and not see death?
Can he deliver his life from the power of the grave?
Selah
49Lord, where are Your former lovingkindnesses,
Which You swore to David in Your truth?
50Remember, Lord, the reproach of Your servants
How I bear in my bosom the reproach of all the many peoples,
51With which Your enemies have reproached, O Lord,
With which they have reproached the footsteps of Your anointed.
52Blessed be the Lord forevermore!
Amen and Amen.
-Psalm 89:46-52
I have heard many teachings on having the boldness to question the Lord. I've seen Christians be praised for being upset with God. I've heard pastors proclaim how they shouted to the heavens their displeasure with various circumstances. In these they frequently point to examples such as the Psalms or Job to demonstrate that God is a big boy and can handle some questioning. Even as I was young in the faith I found this to be incredibly troubling. For the example in Job, while he did in fact question God with much boldness, the Lord rebuked him for such questioning!
As far as the examples found in the Psalms are concerned, such as that which is above, they are always done in reverence of who God is. There is a large difference between questioning the Lord and wondering where the Lord is in a situation. One accuses, and the other, in knowing the character of God, wants to know what He is working out. Yet even in the midst of this line of questioning, the Psalmist is not disrespectful or irreverent to the Lord. Remember your place and remember His place above all.
