Psalm 68:1-3

1Let God arise,
Let His enemies be scattered;
Let those also who hate Him flee before Him.
2As smoke is driven away,
So drive them away;
As wax melts before the fire,
So let the wicked perish at the presence of God.
3But let the righteous be glad;
Let them rejoice before God;
Yes, let them rejoice exceedingly.

-Psalm 68:1-3

There is an interesting observation that takes place at the entrance of God throughout Scripture. You typically see 2 responses. The wicked flee or perish and the righteous rejoice. For the sake of today's devotion I want to discuss what it looks like today of the wicked fleeing. The reality is that darkness is no match for the light. With that being the case, why does it seem like we are so surrounded by darkness?

I remember a time that I went cave exploring and found one that went really far back and curved away from any form of natural light. We eventually got to a spot where the darkness was almost blinding as I could feel my eyes straining for any form of light I could get. A friend of mine had a very powerful flashlight that he turned on and my eyes immediately felt a sense of relief. However, with how powerful this flashlight was, being so deep in darkness it seemed that this high powered flashlight didn't avail much. One by one we turned our flashlights on and watched as each one contributed to deepening the extent that light would illuminate. After the excitement of our experiment, we turned and walked out.

While there are several analogies we can draw from such a story, I will draw attention to a few. To the depth of darkness that we are in, we are more effective in unity. It was when we all were illuminating that such light seemed to be so effective. The Lord has designed for us to be in need of community with one another in the faith. Surrounded by such darkness there is definitely a strain that as we are together we can relieve. Imagine then the rejoicing when the very source of light comes to that darkness. Surely the darkness scatters and those who are in the light rejoice.

This is the expectation of us looking forward to the Lord's coming. Let God arise! Let us see the effect that He has upon the darkness of this world. Let us rejoice in Him bringing such a light!
