Psalm 54:1-3

1Save me, O God, by Your name,
And vindicate me by Your strength.
2Hear my prayer, O God;
Give ear to the words of my mouth.
3For strangers have risen up against me,
And oppressors have sought after my life;
They have not set God before them.
-Psalm 54:1-3

I remember when my brother and his wife were going through the process of choosing a name for their firstborn. When he liked a name, his wife knew someone with that name that she had a poor association with. Likewise when she had a name she liked, my brother would have an association with someone with that name that was just as bad. It took a while but eventually they reached a consensus. We do not always realize that we do this, but we associate works with names. Adolf was a much more popular name before WWII. Yet due to association, that has since dropped off and for good reason.

This concept bears much greater significance in the ancient near eastern culture, but it still rings true today that names matter. God stakes His own name on the salvation of His people. The language of the name of God or coming in the name of Jesus holds such significant weight because it is dependent upon whether or not that can be trusted. If He fails or is unfaithful, the name is not valid. When this is being prayed the call is upon the faithfulness of God to deliver as He has said He would.

The faithfulness of God is one to be trusted. He has not failed and never will fail. God's word is final and right. As we have gone through the importance of trusting God through these devotions it is always important to remember that we trust Him as One who is trustworthy. We can have great confidence and boldness when we approach the throne of the Lord.
