Psalm 8

    1      O LORD, our Lord,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth,
Who have set Your glory above the heavens!

2      Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants
    You have ordained strength,
    Because of Your enemies,
That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.

3      When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
4      What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit him?
5      For You have made him a little lower than the angels,
And You have crowned him with glory and honor.

    6      You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands;
You have put all things under his feet,
    7      All sheep and oxen—
Even the beasts of the field,
8      The birds of the air,
And the fish of the sea
That pass through the paths of the seas.

    9      O LORD, our Lord,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth!
-Psalm 8

What a beautiful and humbling Psalm! What cause for rejoicing we have! God, who is above all else is mindful of His creation. Through this Psalm we get a practice that is vital for believers to learn. That practice is that we would enjoy God. Let us look at the meditations David is speaking of.

First, he is recognizing the excellency of the Lord in all of creation. When you see earth and heaven together such as how you do in this psalm, it is often indicative of all creation. He sees that the nature of all things is a testimony of the Lord. He goes on to recognize how the Lord brings for praise through the immaterial and immature in silencing His enemies. And then David comes to a crucial stop and smell the roses type reality.

"When I consider Your heavens..."

Do you take the time to stop and consider the works that the Lord has done? Do you stop to consider the beauty of the nature around us, the world we live in, the majesty of the moon and stars? Do we take that time to enjoy God in His creation? Should we not stop and take the time to meditate upon the Lord in such a way, the value that this Psalm mentions of being considered by the Lord loses its meaning.

David considers deeply how wonderful it is that with all creation being as magnificent and artful as it is, that above all else the Lord would be mindful of man. Take some time today and enjoy God in His creation. Consider how magnificent and wonderful the beauty around us is and then how much more so the Lord cares for you.
