Galatians 3:10-14 | Promise of the Spirit

10All who rely on works of the law are under a curse. For it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” 11Now it is clear that no one is justified before God by the law, because, “The righteous will live by faith.” 12The law, however, is not based on faith; on the contrary, “The man who does these things will live by them.”

13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. For it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” 14He redeemed us in order that the blessing promised to Abraham would come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
-Galatians 3:10-14 BSB
What shall we make of the one who neglects drawing near by faith and instead tries to draw near by works? Paul's conclusion is that they are under a curse. For anyone who attempts to fulfill the law in themselves is subject to the entirety of them. It has been a clear point that the righteous live by faith. But those who follow the law must live by them. What does that mean? It means that the one who attempts to live by the law is not living by faith. Indeed, they cannot.

Jesus took upon Himself the curse of our inability to uphold the law by becoming a curse for us. In His death upon the cross, he became that curse and killed the curse. He raised again to life having put to death the cruse. What remains then for the believer is to draw near by faith. Should we draw near by faith, there is a promise we may receive. That is the promise of the Spirit.

The Spirit is the very faculty of God by which the believer ought to live and move and have their being. Many of us may wish that we had Jesus in manifest person, but it is the manifest person of Jesus who said that it is better that He could go so that the Spirit may fall upon those who believe. It is better for us that we have the Spirit. If it is by the faith that we receive the promise of the Spirit, I am left with one question for you...

Do you believe the Spirit dwells in you?
