Hebrews 1:1-4 | What am I going to do about it?

Reflective Response

I left off the last devotion with a simple, but profound question. Does my life reflect that I believe in the authority of Jesus? I am under the persuasion that what we believe can be found by the evidences of the manifestations of our lives. We should expect to see it in our actions, influencing our decisions, guiding our responses, and directing our steps. Should we not believe something, that too will be reflected. As per the evidence of my lack of an aluminum foil hat, I do not believe that aliens are trying to steal my brain. If I believed that my home had a bomb in it, my family would not be there. We can see clearly in just those few examples how belief impacts our lives. So when I propose my question concerning the authority of Jesus, I should be able to see evidence of what that might look like. But what should belief of authority actually look like?
14 You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.
-John 15:14

Obedience

We have a pretty decent understanding of authority when it comes to the workplace. Boss says you need to do something. What do you do? You do what he said. Why? He has authority. Because you believe he has authority, you obey what he says. So the same for the Lord. If He truly has authority in our lives, we will do what He commands us. The first epistle of John is full of this type of language. How can we say we love God and not do what He commands us? How can we say we believe He has authority and not heed His instructions?
10      With my whole heart I have sought You;
    Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!
-Psalm 119:10
In addition to the obedience, we will search out the Lord's instruction to know what we ought to do. If we truly believe He has the authority in our lives, this should become second nature. We don't want to operate outside of His authority, lest we become our own authority. This is the problem the Israelites ran into as they often forgot the Lord their God and did what was right in their own sight.

Rest

This one may come as a surprise when it comes to the authority of the Lord, but there is a promised rest for those who believe. If we truly trust in His authority over all things, then why do we worry or fret about the things in our lives? Part of the authority of the Lord is then believing the things He says. Do we rest in the promises of God? If He calls me a saint but I call me a sinner, who is right? If I say I'm filthy and He says I'm forgiven, who is right? If I say I am too weak, but He says His grace is sufficient, who is right? Yet we stray from what He says in even believing these promises simply because we feel something different. Do not let emotions be the authority in your life. Rather, turn your mind to what Paul instructs.
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!
5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. 9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
-Philippians 4:4-9
When our mind is set upon heavenly things properly, peace becomes an inevitable conclusion. As far as the part I must play, I ought to take my mind through the Scriptures and through my life to properly examine if I have submitted all to the Lord. As much as I would hope this would be a single moment, it is a life long process. I pray that we all can do such things.

I only covered two evidences of authority in our lives, that of obedience and that of rest. What other evidence can you think of that would show you believe in the authority of God?
