John 21 | What's happening (and who's involved)?

Following His resurrection, Jesus continues appearing to His disciples. In this particular
passage, we see that many of the disciples were still together. Peter heads off to go fishing
and the rest end up joining him. They find their way back into old patterns, but there is an
interesting twist to the way history repeats itself.

Jesus stood on the shore and called out to them asking if they have gotten anything. They
responded that they had not. Jesus tells them to put the net on the right side of the boat.
When they do, they could not draw the net in because of how much fish was there. It is at this moment that the lightbulb goes off in John's mind. He calls out, "It is the Lord!" Peter throws on his outer garment and dives into the water rushing toward Jesus. The rest follow
on the boat. When making it to shore, they share a meal with Jesus with the fish that was
caught.

After they ate breakfast together, Jesus has a moment with Peter. The conversation follows
an interesting pattern where Jesus asks if Peter loves Him, and Peter would affirm it. This
would happen three times over. Some draw a distinction between the words that are used
here in the Greek, but most scholars today find that distinction of not much significance.
Both agape and phileo are terms that have been used throughout John to describe the
Father's love for the Son. In some cases, like this, they can almost be used interchangeably.
Nevertheless, Jesus responds to Peter's affirmation by instructing him to feed His sheep.

Following this, Jesus speaks to the type of death Peter would be received, where his hands
would be stretched out and another would carry him to a place he does not wish to go.
Then He gave a simple instruction, "Follow me." John begins to follow Jesus as well and
Peter questions John. Jesus leaves it simply for Peter to be concerned with himself
following the Lord. Some suggested that the statement meant that John would never die,
but John makes it clear in this gospel that that is not what Jesus said.

The book concludes with a powerful statement that there were many other things that
Jesus did. The world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amazingly,
we continue to have new books as the Lord continues His work in the lives of the believer.

What observations are you making?
