Hebrews 2:1-4 | What's happening (and who's involved)?

A Warning For All

10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
-2 Peter 2:10-11
We are given a solemn warning in our passage in Hebrews. There is instruction given followed by consequence. The entire passage is written in the context of chapter 1, as indicated by the present "therefore". Given how Jesus is truly greater than any of those that came before, there is a response we ought to have. Chapter 2 is what begins to discuss that response. There must be a more earnest heed given to those things of the Lord. Should we not, we run the risk of drifting away.

The writer of Hebrews makes a clear dividing line. If we were able to listen to the words given by angels, why would we not give heed to the words of the Son? If, by the words of angels, every transgression and every disobedience was met with justice, what would we receive if we neglect what the Son offers to us now?

It becomes clear that the message of the Son is an extremely important one. Think of it this way. If I was talking with my brother and he mentioned that he was going to visit with my mom, I could tell him to say hi for me. That message is important enough to let my brother carry it to my mother. But if I had some really big news, it would be almost inappropriate for me to share it the same way. "Oh you are going to see Mom? Tell her we're having another baby!" The importance of the message may very well change the messenger. Jesus came to set the captive free. He spoke of bringing forth the Kingdom of God. He brought salvation. That's an important message.

Think of the Old Testament and how these messages would get delivered. When an angel would visit someone, would they not heed the message with great importance? If a prophet came, were people not anticipating the weight of what would be said? We see where the people neglected the message of the prophets and what became of them. The prophets were confirmed in their message by signs and wonders. So the Father has born witness of the Son in similar fashion. There were signs, wonders, miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit given. The message to listen up is a clear one.

There will be a lot of lessons to pick up from this text! Take this passage deep and keep reading through it. Do you have any additional observations?
