Hebrews 12:18-29 | What's the lesson for me today?
Wrath. Fear. Judgement. Death. These are themes that are prominent in this week's passage.
Salvation. Joy. Celebration. Rejoicing. Gratitude. Thankfulness. These are also themes that are prominent in this week's passage.
It can be extremely easy to fall to one side or the other. Are we supposed to fear or rejoice? Yes. No matter how uncomfortable the answer might be, it is yes. We come before an Almighty God. Consider the fact that you are a temple of the Holy Spirit. This means that the very Spirit that hovered over the face of the waters in Genesis is the very Spirit that dwells in you. The God that created all things simply by speaking is the God that you approach. Through all the incredible things we can read through in Scripture, it is this very God that we have a personal relationship with. That is both incredible and terrifying.
Should we just sit for a moment upon this revelation, we ought to find such great fear as well as great gratitude in our hearts before Him. This is the King of kings and Lord of lords. This is the First and the Last. This is the Alpha and Omega. He makes His abode in us. He invites us to His holy mountain and offers us salvation. How can we respond? It leaves me in tears just writing this; tears of fear and tears of praise. Who am I that He would bring me in? How great and incredible is He? How tremendous is this invitation? There are so many things I could reflect on and simply sit in awe, fear, and with great trembling. Oh how thankful I must be that Jesus would cleanse me that I may approach this Mighty King! Oh the praise that should leave my lips as I enter His presence!
My lesson is no different than that of the original audience. I must not refuse His voice.
