Hebrews 6:1-3 | What's happening (and who's involved)?

The Fundamentals

Solomon spoke truly when he highlighted in Ecclesiastes that there is nothing new under the sun. The same problems that were had in the day of the book of Hebrews being written are the same problems we face today. I have seen this problem in just about every church I have gone to. It may be the most spiritual church; it may be the most biblically sound church. The reality is that whatever church you go to, you will find believers stuck on the fundamentals.

I want to be clear that the fundamentals are not bad. But there should be a point where the fundamentals achieve what fundamentals are supposed to achieve. They should serve as a foundation to build the rest off of. Perhaps to our dismay, the things that are addressed in these few verses are called elementary. Yet, they are the things we have been stuck on for generations and generations. In fact, I would say the modern church and her problems are the result of generations failing to move beyond this point. To many believers, the starting point is also the finish line. But let's look at what the text is saying.

The writer to the Hebrews exhorts the believer to move beyond the elementary principles of Christ. This is not to say to neglect them, but to advance beyond them. The place at which we are to advance is "to press on to perfection". This command in it of itself will have churches wincing at the language, wanting immediately to discredit it and shout from the rooftops, "But you will never achieve perfection!" True as that may be in the fleshly body, we are not being instructed in this verse to simply make ourselves perfect, but to press on to that which is. We are to press on to perfection. We are to press on to completeness. We are to press on to maturity. All of which I have heard believers incessantly argue we will never have. As such, they discredit this verse and live solely in the fundamentals that Scripture tells us to move beyond.

Here is the list of what Scripture calls the foundation that we are to move beyond:
  • Repentance from dead works
  • Faith toward God
  • Doctrine of baptisms
  • Laying on of hands
  • Resurrection from the dead
  • Eternal judgment

As we examine this list, we find a strong majority of things people get stuck on. These are the hotly debated subjects throughout Scripture. And these are the foundations. It will be a fun journey to explore these subjects throughout the week! As we anticipate going through this, what observations are you making in this text?
