John 14:8-21 | What's happening (and who's involved)?

Philip grabs ahold of what Jesus was saying. The goal is the Father and Jesus is the way. He asks then for Jesus to show them the Father and that it would be sufficient for them. This leads to a bit of a rebuke and revelation from Jesus.

The Son is the image of the Father. In seeing Jesus, they are seeing the revelation of the Father. He reveals a very deep mystery of He and the Father being One and also reiterates that the authority He speaks from is not His own, but the Father's. Through this He calls them to faith. Believe the relationship He has with the Father. Otherwise, believe in the works He has done and what those testify of Him. The evidence will be clear.

Jesus continues His teaching in revealing the result of that belief. The works that Jesus does, they will do, and even greater. Jesus will be responsive to their prayers and perform what is asked in faith.

Moving through faith, Jesus then discusses the nature of love in the believer. If you love Jesus, keep His commands. It is out of this that Jesus says He will send the Helper who will abide with them forever - the Spirit of Truth. Now a caveat is given. The world cannot receive the Spirit of truth. And there is a reason given. The world neither sees Him nor knows Him. So then they cannot receive Him. But for Jesus' disciples, they do know Him. Jesus reveals that the Spirit dwells with them and will be in them. In giving that confidence, Jesus promises His own return to them as well.

He shares that He will be departing, but will live. As a result of His life, they also will live. He goes to join His Father once again. Jesus then summarizes with this amazing verse.

21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”
-John 14:21
