John 14:1-7 | What's a lesson for the original audience?

The lesson for the original audience is not far at all for the lesson for us. At the core of this is a very central verse to our faith.

6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
-John 14:6

This both defines the fact that Jesus is the way to eternal life but it also defines what eternal life is. Jesus did not say no one goes to heaven except through Him. He also does not say no one comes to happiness or anything of the sort. He said no one comes to the Father.

The lesson that will play for the original audience will break down to Jesus being the way. But I believe the lesson we will take away is that the goal is the Father. The original audience did not share our modern views of what heaven might be like. They had something else in mind, but the question of that destination brought the question of the means by which they get there. Jesus is answering that. The answer is in Him. And He defines that in three ways. By the way that they walk, by the truth they hold to, and the life led. Jesus fulfills all of that. By following Jesus, the path is abundantly clear. So the lesson is a simple one: follow Jesus.
