John 14:1-7 | What's happening (and who's involved)?

Jesus is continuing his discourse with the disciples after Judas has left. He just shared with Peter that he will deny him thrice. This is what enters us into chapter 14 where Jesus says, "Let not your heart be troubled." In light of the encouragement to not be troubled, the direction Jesus takes it to is faith. They believe in God, they must also believe in Him. He comforts His disciples in advance with the promises that He goes to prepare a place for them. He promises His return and that He will receive them again.

Thomas raises a question that is pertinent. He states that they have no idea where Jesus is going and asks how then they could know the way. Jesus answers in a different way than I think the disciples were thinking. Rather than addressing where He is going, He directs them to the way they should go. That way is through Jesus.

6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
-John 14:6

Jesus then hints at the idea of where He is going. He is going to the Father. By knowing Jesus, they know the Father. By following Jesus they also can get to the Father. Jesus is the way in which the Father becomes accessible to them. That is an incredible reality.
