John 13:1-20 | What's happening (and who's involved)?

Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
-John 13:1

The beauty of the passage we are exploring is that it exemplifies the love of God above and beyond. He knew His end was coming, but Jesus loved those who were His own to the end. The passage we are looking at shows how that continued even once Jesus knew He was about to depart to the Father. Let's look at this.

Supper has just ended, the devil has already warped Judas, and Jesus, being full of conviction, lays aside His garments and takes a towel and girds Himself with it. Then He goes to His disciples and begins to wash their feet. It specifies that He would use the towel He girded Himself with to wipe their feet.

Naturally, Peter had to protest this process. As Jesus insists upon this act of service, Peter, instead of asking for none, asks for more. Jesus also corrects this.

Once Jesus finishes, He takes His garments back up, sits down, and teaches again. He instructs them to look upon the model that He set. Jesus, who is seen from the disciples as Teacher and Lord, just humbled Himself, taking upon the form of a servant, and cleaned the feet of the disciples. If Jesus was able to do this, they ought to do it to one another. He promises a blessing to those who follow Jesus' example.

There will be a lot more to explore as we get into this passage throughout the week. It is rich in theological context and connections, so I am very excited to continue to dive into this.

What observations are you making?
