John 11:1-44 | What's the connection?

Many scholars have agreed and concluded some of the same similarities I want to share with you today. The first of which is the similarities of Moses and his signs and the signs of Jesus. Moses began with turning water into blood. Jesus began with turning water into wine. Moses concluded with the death of the firstborn in the plagues of Egypt. Jesus concluded with raising the dead.

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
-Hebrews 1:1-4

The comparison between Jesus and Moses is not at all an uncommon one. Not all of their signs line up like this either. What a lot of the biblical authors do is show how Jesus excels over Moses in just about every way. The Law was insufficient to do what Jesus did.

3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh
-Romans 8:3

After the Law was given and Moses came down from Mount Sinai, he witnessed the people worshipping the golden calf. When judgment came upon them, about 3,000 died.

28 So the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And about three thousand men of the people fell that day.
-Exodus 32:28

When the Spirit came in Acts 2, after Peter preached to the multitudes, about 3,000 were given life.

41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.
-Acts 2:41

4 And we have such trust through Christ toward God. 5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, 6 who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
-2 Cor. 3:4-6

There is an important distinction that John makes throughout his epistle and it is that Jesus is better. Jesus is greater. He is the One. He is the Messiah. And what is it that comes from Him? He is the resurrection and the life. None who come before the Father will do so without Jesus. He has power over death. That is pretty amazing.

What connections are you making?
