John 6:60-71 | What's a lesson for the original audience?

63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.
-John 6:63-64

Herein lies the crux of the lesson that Jesus is giving. It is not to their benefit to receive a spiritual message by way of the flesh. To receive what the Lord is saying from an entirely fleshly point of view would be foolishness. Coming from the mouth of Jesus are life-giving words. The people missed it and the reason they missed it is unbelief.

To contrast this narrative, we have Peter's response to Jesus giving them a way out.

67 Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”
68 But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
-John 6:67-69

Where those who did not believe failed to see Jesus' words as life, those who did believe wanted nothing else than to be with Him whose words were life. The others could not come to the conclusion of Jesus being the Christ. The twelve who believed did.

At the heart of this passage, there are two major themes: spiritual mindset and faith. These two go hand in hand.
