John 1:1-13 | What's the lesson for me today?
I have found that, in so many ways, the development of the believer is one where you continuously find out what you truly do or do not believe about God. I have had a saying that I have brought up all throughout my time in ministry. "What you do or do not believe about God will show up in your life."
It can be easy when finances are going well to believe that the Lord is your provider. It can seem so simple when you are well to believe that the Lord wants healing for the sick. It can be a walk in the park to see God's love for you when you are feeling really good about life. But what happens when those things are challenged?
In this section in John, we are deeply challenged as to whether we really believe that Jesus is who Scripture declares He is. It is important for us to consider the implications one way or another if He is or if He isn't.
If He is not God, we are still in our sins. By what authority are our sins forgiven? Consider it this way - if you got a speeding ticket, and you know you can't get out of it, you will have to pay. If you get a call from a random number and you are told, "Hey don't worry about that speeding ticket! You are all covered." You might have a degree of hope, but you would definitely be suspicious as to what authority they are saying that from. It would be foolish to simply assume it is all covered because you have no idea what the source is. However, if you got a call from the courthouse and they told you it was covered and you don't have to worry about it, you'd have a great deal of confidence. For the one to whom the offense was committed has forgiven the offense. Similarly, having the confidence in knowing where Jesus comes from can give us even more confidence in knowing that the forgiveness is legit.
Jesus, the Light of the World, has shone into the darkness of our hearts that we may believe and be given the right to become children of God. That is good news for those who believe.
