Proverbs 19:18

18Chasten your son while there is hope,
And do not set your heart on his destruction.
-Proverbs 19:18

Correction must be brought in a timely matter. You do not want to bring correction or chastening after the individual is too far gone. Catch it ahead of time and bring it in love. In the midst of correction, take heed to yourself that you do not overdo it. There are two ways in which your heart may be set upon the destruction of the one you correct. The first is by not bringing correction at all. This is the trap many fall into. Confrontation is uncomfortable, but to not say anything is to assure that they will walk this path of destruction. The second way is to put the individual on blast. I am sure we are all familiar with this type. Most of us have likely been on both sides of this one. When correction is brought too hard, it can cause the one who is being corrected to be discouraged. Correction should ultimately seek to uplift one from the hole they have dug. It should not begin to bury them in that hole. Be careful with how you bring about correction, but be sure that you do. Let us walk in unity as the body of Christ and refine our brothers and sisters in the Lord.
