Proverbs 17:27-28

    27      He who has knowledge spares his words,
    And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.
    28      Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace;
    When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.
-Proverbs 17:27-28

We all may know that what we say really does matter. Considering what we say before we say it bears a lot of wisdom. We have heard the common saying, "Think before you speak." So the same this Proverb teaches. Being selective in our speech does not mean that we have to be silent and stoic, but rather intentional with the words we opt in to using. As Ephesians teaches, we should speak only what is necessary for edification. Our intent should be to build up and encourage righteousness and expose darkness. We should not be speaking out of the intensity of emotions. We should be speaking out of the righteousness that the Lord has placed in us.
