Proverbs 16:18-19
18Pride goes before destruction,
And a haughty spirit before a fall.
19Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly,
Than to divide the spoil with the proud.
-Proverbs 16:18-19
Understanding that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble is enough motivation for me to want to walk my steps in humility. That being said, there is still part of me that ponders why that is the case. There is the surface level answer that demonstrates how pride resists God and therefore God resists the proud. However, I believe there is more. Pride puffs up. It fills something. If our hearts are full of pride, then how can the Lord enter in and do His work? If I have a cup that is full of gunk, how will I fill the cup with pure water? Whatever water I add becomes gunky. Humility empties out the cup. When the vessel is empty, it is ready to be used. Therefore, the Lord can use an individual that is humble before Him, and so He gives grace. Do not delight in your own pride. Delight yourself in humility. Humble yourself before the Lord and see that you are fit for the Master's use.
