Proverbs 6:16-19 - False Witness

16These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
17A proud look,
A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood,
18A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that are swift in running to evil,
19A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who sows discord among brethren.
-Proverbs 6:16-19

A common misconception in Scripture is that false witness is just speaking lies in general. This is not the case. False witness has more to do with incrimination than anything else. That being said, it is something that can happen within relationships among one another. An example of this would be in the form of slander or gossip. Incriminating each other to one another on the basis falsehood still is false witness. It is something that is used to have gain over another. False witness is false testimony. Such things are abominable to the Lord.

While the enemy works in deceit, we operate in truth. What cause have we to commit false witness against one another? If in all we do, we do to the Lord, truth should be the foundation for our lives. We strive for justice. False witness opposes it. Ground yourself in truth. Be so immersed in the word of God that truth springs forth as the fruit of the vine. Cling to the Lord your God in all you do.
