Proverbs 6:6-11
6Go to the ant, you sluggard!
Consider her ways and be wise,
7Which, having no captain,
Overseer or ruler,
8Provides her supplies in the summer,
And gathers her food in the harvest.
9How long will you slumber, O sluggard?
When will you rise from your sleep?
10A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to sleep—
11So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler,
And your need like an armed man.
-Proverbs 6:6-11
Along the line of very practical and quickly applicable wisdom, Scripture also has quite a bit to say about laziness. There is an important distinction to be made here. Rest is not laziness. That being said, we cannot use rest as an excuse for laziness. The constant laying down or avoiding responsibilities leads to problems in our lives. It is unhealthy for us physically. It degrades us mentally. Emotionally, we lean upon it as a crutch. Above all, it hinders us spiritually. We are called to be a diligent people. We should be the best of workers, of caretakers in our homes, of supporting our children, and of being there for one another. Laziness inhibits so much of our lives as entitlement continues to rise. Much of laziness is rooted in pride. Humble yourself to the Lord and humble your view of self. Seek to lift up those around you. Work with diligence and do all unto the glory of God.
