Psalm 118:24

24This is the day the Lord has made;
We will rejoice and be glad in it.
-Psalm 118:24

There is a certain irony to the way that we read Scripture. Most of us are very well aware of the fact that verses are written in a particular context for a particular reasons. However, we have pet-verses that even when we read it in its context, we fail to actually see what it is saying in that context. This is one of those verses. I am sure that we have all heard of that person or have been that person who has quoted this in the morning, trying to claim positivity for the day! Yet contextually, there is no indication to say that "this day" is speaking of "today." What we have been examining throughout the entire Psalm is the coming of the Lord. The day that the Lord has made that is being talked about here is the full revelation of Jesus. To us, this is speaking of the second coming! It is speaking of the Day of Judgment, The Day of the Lord! While it is true that the Lord has made today, it would be a misuse of Scripture to claim this passage for that. We are to instead look forward expectantly and rejoicingly for the Day of the Lord, when Jesus is fully revealed. Live for that! Live unto the Lord having this fully on your mind.
