Psalm 118:7-9
7The Lord is for me among those who help me;
Therefore I shall see my desire on those who hate me.
8It is better to trust in the Lord
Than to put confidence in man.
9It is better to trust in the Lord
Than to put confidence in princes.
-Psalm 118:7-9
Verse 8 is a verse that I wish we would all plaster in every wall in our homes, as the wallpaper for all of our devices, and inscribed upon everything we own. One of the greatest downfalls of our Christian faith is the confidence we place in man. Our confidence in man's ability is why we are often slow to pray. It is why we prefer devotional books instead of actually learning how to read our bibles on our own. It why we so fear what man can do to us. The shallow nature of our faith, so rooted in pride, is because so many are man-pleasers. We trust in our political leaders to fix our country instead of placing our trust in God. We trust our world to raise our children for us instead of placing them in the hands of the Lord. We trust the opinions of "spiritual" leaders instead of discovering the truth in our Bibles on our own.
The trust we place in man is deadly to us. I have seen the propagation of horrible theologies on the basis of trust in man. The modern Christian fails to seek because man seeks for them. In this you should fear. Do you have such great confidence in man that you will take every word spoken by them as truth? Search the word yourself and trust in God alone to provide the way. Do not take my words nor any pastors' words as truth because we have spoken it. Confirm those words according to Scripture, or do away with them. Trust not in man. Trust in the Lord.
Therefore I shall see my desire on those who hate me.
