Psalm 96:1-3

1Oh, sing to the Lord a new song!
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
2Sing to the Lord, bless His name;
Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.
3Declare His glory among the nations,
His wonders among all peoples.
-Psalm 96:1-3

Truth be told, I am a hymn kind of guy. The thing that I so love about them is the richness of the content within them. In previous years, I had been cynical toward many of the new worship songs that had been released. A dear friend of mine approached me on the subject and brought this passage up to me which caused me to think very deeply about how I approached new worship songs. Instead of immediately dismissing them because they were not hymns, I would read the lyrics. This led me to what I modernly practice in terms of what songs I choose to worship with.

Do not dismiss new songs to the Lord. We are encouraged to sing a new song! That being said, not every new song should be sung to the Lord. We are told to worship in Spirit and in Truth. Should we lack one, we immediately lack the other. If we lack the Spirit, we lack truth. If we lack truth, we lack the Spirit. Coming forward in Spirit means we are coming forward under the banner of God, bearing witness to His truth, which is sound in the word of God. I test lyrics to Scripture. If it is not aligned, then I will not worship with such a song. I would encourage the same of you.

Sing to the Lord a new song! Rejoice in Him. Be quick and eager to give praise. Yet do so according to the word.
