Psalm 89:38-45

38But You have cast off and abhorred,
You have been furious with Your anointed.
39You have renounced the covenant of Your servant;
You have profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.
40You have broken down all his hedges;
You have brought his strongholds to ruin.
41All who pass by the way plunder him;
He is a reproach to his neighbors.
42You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries;
You have made all his enemies rejoice.
43You have also turned back the edge of his sword,
And have not sustained him in the battle.
44You have made his glory cease,
And cast his throne down to the ground.
45The days of his youth You have shortened;
You have covered him with shame.

-Psalm 89:38-45

As we discussed the goodness and faithfulness of the Lord's discipline in yesterday's devotion, we must address the other side of this. While His discipline is good and should be recognized as such, we ought not to seek it out. This is the equivalent to the child who makes trouble simply to get attention from his parents. Sin is not something we should play around with. Do not test the bounds of the incredible grace of the Lord, no matter how vast it truly is.

While God does delight in showing mercy, He does not delight in His people sinning. His delight in showing mercy is the delight that the had repented. God does not have to bring destruction upon His people. In this He delights. To push the bounds of the grace of God is test far too frightful to attempt. It is a dangerous game to play and is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the Living God. Walk diligently in genuine repentance. Flee from sin. Die to sin. Walk forth in righteousness and the Lord will reward.
