Psalm 82
1God stands in the congregation of the mighty;
He judges among the gods.
2How long will you judge unjustly,
And show partiality to the wicked?
Selah
3Defend the poor and fatherless;
Do justice to the afflicted and needy.
4Deliver the poor and needy;
Free them from the hand of the wicked.
5They do not know, nor do they understand;
They walk about in darkness;
All the foundations of the earth are unstable.
6I said, “You are gods,
And all of you are children of the Most High.
7But you shall die like men,
And fall like one of the princes.”
8Arise, O God, judge the earth;
For You shall inherit all nations.
-Psalm 82
There is an important thing to note as we look at this Psalm. First, the word for gods could also be translated to mighty ones. A few accusers against Scripture will take this to say that there are many gods and many road, then, that lead to heaven. This is undoubtedly incorrect. The judgment is passed off against other rulers. What is important to take away is the heart that the Lord has.
Throughout Scripture there has always been a focus upon the hurting and the broken. The poor, the orphan, the widow, and the slave all are especially cared for by the Lord. Those who are defenseless are to be defended. As believers, we should have ready hearts to care for those who are hurting or in need. Let us be humble to the Lord and allow Him to reveal to us how we can serve those around us and be a defender to those who are in need of it.
