Psalm 78:65-72
65Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,
Like a mighty man who shouts because of wine.
66And He beat back His enemies;
He put them to a perpetual reproach.
67Moreover He rejected the tent of Joseph,
And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
68But chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion which He loved.
69And He built His sanctuary like the heights,
Like the earth which He has established forever.
70He also chose David His servant,
And took him from the sheepfolds;
71From following the ewes that had young He brought him,
To shepherd Jacob His people,
And Israel His inheritance.
72So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart,
And guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.
-Psalm 78:65-72
We see a lot of language in Scripture surrounding the Lord shepherding His people. While many view it as insulting to be as though a sheep in the flock, there is a great measure of humility that is found in it. There is a reason shepherds are not shepherding donkeys. They are stubborn. They are crude. They are difficult to work with as they do what they want. Scripture also has a lot to say about the stubbornness of the donkey. We, as believers, can respond in one of two way to the Lord. We can either be one who would be shepherded and express humility, or we can walk as stubborn ones doing as we choose.
Evidently, the one who is to be shepherded will do far better than the stubborn donkey who does what they see fit. Humble yourself before the Lord. He resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Where He leads, follow. When He speaks, listen. Open up your heart to Him that you would be a good recipient of what He says and teaches. Seek Him in His word as He may be found and be prepared to walk in obedience. As one in His flock, show yourself to be one who follows the way of your Shepherd.
