Psalm 78:9-16

9The children of Ephraim, being armed and carrying bows,
Turned back in the day of battle.
10They did not keep the covenant of God;
They refused to walk in His law,
11And forgot His works
And His wonders that He had shown them.
12Marvelous things He did in the sight of their fathers,
In the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
13He divided the sea and caused them to pass through;
And He made the waters stand up like a heap.
14In the daytime also He led them with the cloud,
And all the night with a light of fire.
15He split the rocks in the wilderness,
And gave them drink in abundance like the depths.
16He also brought streams out of the rock,
And caused waters to run down like rivers.
-Psalm 78:9-16

While we have put such a focus upon children in the last couple of devotions, I have a challenge for us all. Remember. Sometimes I find myself amazed at how easy it can be to go through a day and forget everything I was supposed to do. At my previous job as a youth pastor I would have reminders set on my phone, sticky notes on my desk, notes written on a white board, pop-up notifications on my laptop, and have my day setup around the thing I was supposed to do and still would forget to do it. Of course with all those reminders my forgetting was not simply due to negligence. I was heavy laden with many other responsibilities that cluttered my mind and led to forgetfulness of what I really needed to do.

Our lives are so filled with clutter that I am not in the least bit surprised that we can so easily forget the Lord. Even in a culture of "simpler times" in bible days, they still managed to forget the things of the Lord. As a quick strategy, we must learn how to remember the things of the Lord.

First, we must establishing reminders. We must be reminded of what the Lord has done. Practice commemorating things that the Lord has done in your life.  Journal it. Praise Him for it. Mark it in a calendar. Whatever it may be, remind yourself of His works. Also remind yourself to continue to grow. Set reminders to spend time in the Word. Set alarms to pray. We need these reminders in our lives.

Second, remove the clutter. As with my example, when our minds are cluttered, even with reminders, we can still forget. Or rather, we forget our priority. Set consistency in your schedule where you can focus on the Lord. Go to a place without distractions. Leave your phone  or device behind. Use a paper bible. Be rid of the clutter. If your life has you bouncing all over the place and you can't seem to find ground to stand on, it is time to reprioritize and consider what really matters here.

Remembering the things of the Lord takes discipline. As much as I wish it would be easy, there are a lot of things out there competing for this place in our minds. Be disciplined and grow in remembrance of the Lord.
