Psalm 77:16-20

16The waters saw You, O God;
The waters saw You, they were afraid;
The depths also trembled.
17The clouds poured out water;
The skies sent out a sound;
Your arrows also flashed about.
18The voice of Your thunder was in the whirlwind;
The lightnings lit up the world;
The earth trembled and shook.
19Your way was in the sea,
Your path in the great waters,
And Your footsteps were not known.
20You led Your people like a flock
By the hand of Moses and Aaron.
-Psalm 77:16-20

Nature is, in part, terrifying to me. While it is so peaceful and calming, I am aware that at any point I can empirically realize how small I am compared to it. As I visit the ocean, I am captivated by how vast it is. When I look down into the Grand Canyon, I marvel at the complexity and am reminded how fragile my own life is. When I then read sections of Scripture like this I am found in complete awe at how large our God is.

Sometimes the Lord can hold this place in our minds where He is somehow infinitely larger than all yet smaller than the issues we face in life. This is, of course, a wrong perspective. Passages like the one above remind me how real and how powerful our God truly is. All of creation is subject to the Creator and He upholds it. When you look around and see the incredible vastness and complexity of nature, remember who reigns over it all.
