Psalm 69:29-33

29But I am poor and sorrowful;
Let Your salvation, O God, set me up on high.
30I will praise the name of God with a song,
And will magnify Him with thanksgiving.
31This also shall please the Lord better than an ox or bull,
Which has horns and hooves.
32The humble shall see this and be glad;
And you who seek God, your hearts shall live.
33For the Lord hears the poor,
And does not despise His prisoners.
-Psalm 69:29-33

As I read this I think of Jesus' teaching on the sermon on the mount. He says,

Blessed is the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

I've had many questions come my way about why God favors those who are poor and I've heard many sermons over this topic. The reality stands that those who are without recognizes they have a need. What is incredible to me is that the poverty that is spoken of here is that of the spirit. If we think even in our high times that we have no need, we often do not draw to the Lord. Yet if we remain poor in spirit and cling to the Lord as our life source we then cling to our very salvation.

As those who have received salvation we rejoice in our Savior! Something that is interesting to note is that Scripture recognizes praise as a sacrifice and an offering. Here it is saying that such praising is even better than the sacrifice of an ox or a bull. Do not underestimate how the Lord delights in your praise. Praise is most definitely beneficial to you, but that is not why we praise. Give honor and glory to the Lord as it is due. Be glad in the Lord and the Lord will be glad in you.
