Psalm 68:4-7
4Sing to God, sing praises to His name;
Extol Him who rides on the clouds,
By His name Yah,
And rejoice before Him.
5A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows,
Is God in His holy habitation.
6God sets the solitary in families;
He brings out those who are bound into prosperity;
But the rebellious dwell in a dry land.
7O God, when You went out before Your people,
When You marched through the wilderness,
-Psalm 68:4-7
The character of God is such an incredible study to me. I can get lost for hours in contemplation of His character. In no sense is there a requirement written out that God should be good to us. Rather, it is the very nature of God that He would so choose to be good to us. In this we also find what James identifies as pure and undefiled religion before the Lord. He says to visit orphans and widows and to keep oneself unstained from the things of this world. God is a Father to the fatherless. He defends widows. He is holy. As being His children, we walk in the same way. We are called to be holy as He is holy and to emulate His nature.
The place of praise helps us to recognize the very character of God. Giving praise to the Lord is an excellent teacher of how good God is and can often even be convicting as we see where we may need to grow. Make it a regular practice to praise God for His character. Let it become natural to you to see the character of God and rejoice in Him through it.
