Psalm 57:4-11

4My soul is among lions;
I lie among the sons of men
Who are set on fire,
Whose teeth are spears and arrows,
And their tongue a sharp sword.
5Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
Let Your glory be above all the earth.
6They have prepared a net for my steps;
My soul is bowed down;
They have dug a pit before me;
Into the midst of it they themselves have fallen.
Selah
7My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast;
I will sing and give praise.
8Awake, my glory!
Awake, lute and harp!
I will awaken the dawn.
9I will praise You, O Lord, among the peoples;
I will sing to You among the nations.
10For Your mercy reaches unto the heavens,
And Your truth unto the clouds.
11Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
Let Your glory be above all the earth.
-Psalm 57:4-11

There is an incredible contrast found in this Psalm. Pay attention to the way David's enemies lie in wait for him. There is no doubt that their hope is to destroy David and bring him to ruin. Then look to David's response to that. While the enemies teeth are like spears and arrows and their tongue a sharp sword, David sings and gives praise. He is among lions yet remains steadfast in praise. The result of his trust in the Lord is that the trap his enemies laid they themselves fell into.

David's attitude amidst trial is one that I seek continually to possess. The attitude is continually toward praise. The context of this Psalm is when David hid in the cave from Saul. This is what we would identify as a hard situation to be able to praise in, yet David freely and whole heartedly offers praise before the Lord. As I look through David's life I remain convicted that there are far too many reasons to give praise to not give praise in all circumstances. Be eager and ready to give praise to the Lord in all situations.
