Psalm 50:15-23

Happy New Year!

15      Call upon Me in the day of trouble;
    I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.”

    16      But to the wicked God says:
    “What right have you to declare My statutes,
    Or take My covenant in your mouth,
    17      Seeing you hate instruction
    And cast My words behind you?
    18      When you saw a thief, you consented with him,
    And have been a partaker with adulterers.
    19      You give your mouth to evil,
    And your tongue frames deceit.
    20      You sit and speak against your brother;
    You slander your own mother’s son.
    21      These things you have done, and I kept silent;
    You thought that I was altogether like you;
    But I will rebuke you,
    And set them in order before your eyes.

    22      “Now consider this, you who forget God,
    Lest I tear you in pieces,
    And there be none to deliver:
    23      Whoever offers praise glorifies Me;
    And to him who orders his conduct aright
    I will show the salvation of God.”
-Psalm 50:15-23

It is the new year which means the classic New Years Resolutions. One of the most popular that I have heard and seen is to pray/read the bible more. We all know that it is good and necessary to do. Yet we still get in the flow and so quickly forget how necessary it is. Let us let this passage serve as a reminder as to the importance of keeping the Lord at the forefront of our minds and lives.

First and foremost, call out to the Lord. This must be a regular practice for us. In the day of trouble the Lord will answer, in the times of peace rejoice in Him and He will rejoice in you. Remember the path of wickedness hates instruction, especially that of the Lord. They cast the word of God aside and do what seems right in their own eyes. The words of their own mouths start slipping and gossip becomes near to the heart. Then we find ourselves wondering why the rebuke of the Lord comes.

The consideration that ends this passage is one we should all heed diligently as we pursue to strengthen our relationship with the Lord. The warning is to those who forget God. Such an audience frequents Scripture in a very negative connotation. Those who forget the Lord are in grave danger of a harsh judgement. See the alternative to forgetting the Lord is an attitude of praise and walking in obedience. So alongside the resolutions you may have of reading your bible or praying, be certain you seek to walk in obedience and offer praise diligently. Do not forget the Lord your God.
