Psalm 49:16-20

    16      Do not be afraid when one becomes rich,
    When the glory of his house is increased;
    17      For when he dies he shall carry nothing away;
    His glory shall not descend after him.
    18      Though while he lives he blesses himself
    (For men will praise you when you do well for yourself),
    19      He shall go to the generation of his fathers;
    They shall never see light.
    20      A man who is in honor, yet does not understand,
    Is like the beasts that perish.
-Psalm 49:16-20

This is a very interesting passage when it comes to today's culture. We live in a day and age when self-focus is highly praised. The wealthy are often praised and envied over. Those who have nice things are commended for their ability to have nice things. The big house is recognized by all and regarded as incredible. Yet when that time comes and you are faced with the Lord Almighty, those accomplishments are lost.

In line with the last couple of devotions, we need to remember what it is that we strive for as believers. Are our eyes constantly set on the next thing or are they set upon the Lord? Are we pouring our time into striving for material or immaterial? Be wary with your pursuits and set your focus upon the Lord.
