Psalm 45:1-9
1My heart is overflowing with a good theme;
I recite my composition concerning the King;
My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.
2You are fairer than the sons of men;
Grace is poured upon Your lips;
Therefore God has blessed You forever.
3Gird Your sword upon Your thigh, O Mighty One,
With Your glory and Your majesty.
4And in Your majesty ride prosperously because of truth, humility, and righteousness;
And Your right hand shall teach You awesome things.
5Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the King’s enemies;
The peoples fall under You.
6Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
7You love righteousness and hate wickedness;
Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You
With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.
8All Your garments are scented with myrrh and aloes and cassia,
Out of the ivory palaces, by which they have made You glad.
9Kings’ daughters are among Your honorable women;
At Your right hand stands the queen in gold from Ophir.
-Psalm 45:1-9
As we have discussed at many times the importance of creative praise it is important to note why the Scripture uses praise the way that it does. Our language for prayer and for praise should be coming from the Word of God. As we study the Scriptures it becomes clear the praiseworthiness of the Lord. There was an older gentleman that poured into me quite a bit as I grew up. Being retired, he would spend his days ministering to others and ministering to the Lord. As he began to share his schedule he highlighted what he viewed to be the most important time. He would bow before the Lord physically and tell Him how wonderful and beautiful He was.
This might seem a little strange to some, but that is exactly what this Psalm is doing. He is fairer than the sons of men. He is endowed with beauty. He is full of grace and full of might standing ready at full stature. He is true, humble, and righteous. He loves righteousness and hates wickedness. He reigns forever. These are just a few of the things that the Psalmist viewed as important to praise over. Scripture reiterates these continuously. As such, we ought to praise in a similar fashion. As you bring your praises before the Lord, tell Him what you love about Him. Rejoice in Him and delight yourself in His presence.
