Psalm 37:30-31
30The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom,
And his tongue talks of justice.
31The law of his God is in his heart;
None of his steps shall slide.
-Psalm 37:30-31
The tongue is a powerful tool, a deadly weapon, and an instrument that can be used to reap destruction, sow discord, or bring glory to the Lord and edification to His saints. Scripture has a surprising amount to say about the tongue. James talks about the man who is able to brindle his tongue and calls him a perfect man. Some have taken this as meaning to watch your words carefully. For if you watch your words carefully you will grow and become better and better. However it is forgotten that our words are a symptom of our hearts.
Jesus teaches that it is of the overflow of the heart that the mouth speaks. Take a look at the psalm above and recognize the state of this righteous person. He speaks wisdom and talks of justice because of what? The law of God is in his heart. As the psalmist writes in Psalm 119 he states that he has hidden the word of God in his heart that he might not sin against Him. Start to examine your words and see the condition of your heart. Is God's word hidden that you would not sin against Him? If not, acquaint yourself closely with the word of God. Let that which you let invest in you be holy and righteous. Grow in sanctification by taking heed to the word of God. If His word is hidden in your heart, continue in that so that you may grow thereby ever increasing in the love and knowledge of God.
