Psalm 33:18-22

    18      Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him,
    On those who hope in His mercy,
    19      To deliver their soul from death,
    And to keep them alive in famine.

    20      Our soul waits for the LORD;
    He is our help and our shield.
    21      For our heart shall rejoice in Him,
    Because we have trusted in His holy name.
    22      Let Your mercy, O LORD, be upon us,
    Just as we hope in You.
-Psalm 33:18-22

The eyes of the Lord being upon those who fear Him is a look of favor. There is protection in His gaze as He watches over us. There is deliverance from wickedness and provision made for those who are hoping in Him. As the psalm transitions into waiting upon the Lord, it is important to recognize what that means. We have many places in Scripture that emphasize waiting on the Lord and the blessing that comes alongside that.

Waiting upon the Lord is synonymous with putting our hope in Him. It has to do with dependance. The contrast in this passage was putting our dependance upon governments or military prowess. God is our help in times of need and our shield in times of attack. As we wait upon the Lord we are left rejoicing in Him. Why? We have trusted in Him. When destruction or demise comes, we have a rock to stand on where we cannot be moved. We wait on Him and trust in Him.
