Psalm 2
1Why do the nations rage,
And the people plot a vain thing?
2The kings of the earth set themselves,
And the rulers take counsel together,
Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,
3“Let us break Their bonds in pieces
And cast away Their cords from us.”
4He who sits in the heavens shall laugh;
The Lord shall hold them in derision.
5Then He shall speak to them in His wrath,
And distress them in His deep displeasure:
6“Yet I have set My King
On My holy hill of Zion.”
7“I will declare the decree:
The Lord has said to Me,
‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
8Ask of Me, and I will give You
The nations for Your inheritance,
And the ends of the earth for Your possession.
9You shall break them with a rod of iron;
You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ ”
10Now therefore, be wise, O kings;
Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
11Serve the Lord with fear,
And rejoice with trembling.
12Kiss the Son, lest He be angry,
And you perish in the way,
When His wrath is kindled but a little.
Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.
-Psalm 2
There is no question or doubt among genuine believers that the world is at war against the Lord. Scripture testifies of this reality continually throughout Scripture. In fact, just in our previous devotion we had gone over the difference between the counsel of the ungodly and that of the Word. This 2nd Psalm speaks of the reality of this war. There are those that are waging war against the Lord, be that intentionally or not as those who are not for the Lord work against Him. However, this psalm also speaks to the judgment that comes about to the wicked.
The command given toward the end of this psalm is one we should heed carefully,
"Serve the Lord with fear,
And rejoice with trembling.'
There is no where in Scripture that instructs us to have a contrary attitude to serving the Lord with fear. Though many would find trouble with rejoicing with trembling, these actually go hand-in-hand. Reflecting on yesterday's devotion there is joy in delighting yourself in the Lord, yet still there is fear understanding how mighty and powerful the Lord, as well as His severity.
"Kiss the Son, lest He be angry,
And you perish in the way,
When His wrath is kindled but a little."
Take the time you have now to serve the Lord. The window is short in this life that you have the opportunity and privilege to serve Him. By the time judgment comes, it is far too late to change your mind.
"Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him."
In the time it is that you have now, put your trust in the Lord. The judgment that the Lord brings is good and it is righteous. The fact that we trust in Him is good and righteous. In so doing, the Word of God promises blessing. Indeed in trusting in Him and serving Him with diligence you will be blessed.
