Psalm 1
1Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
2But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
3He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.
4The ungodly are not so,
But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
5Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the ungodly shall perish.
-Psalm 1
Scripture makes the way we ought to walk clear. However, if we are not invested in the Word of God, how can we know which way it is that we must go? What we have represented in Psalm 1 is the counsel of two different sources. The first is that of the ungodly, and the latter is that of the law of the Lord. In reality you are being invested in by one of these two sources. The consequences of the ungodly are rather evident. They are "like the chaff which the wind drives away" and "shall not stand in the judgment".
As for those who meditate in the Word and delight in it there is great reward. They are "like a tree planted by rivers of water." If you have ever seen how trees grow near rivers of flowing water you would know how they flourish. So the same is the one who delights in the law of the Lord. So why does a tree thrive in such conditions? It is because it is continually getting the nutrients and resources that it needs to thrive and grow. In that same manner, as we are delighting in the Lord and are meditating upon His word and counsel, we are receiving the nutrients and resources we need to thrive spiritually.
Take some time today and delight yourself in the Lord. Consider His Scripture and take it to the Lord in prayer. Set time in your schedule this week to do the same. Enjoy being in His presence and rest in His peace.
