Hebrews 5:1-11 | What's the connection?

The Old Order

There are many important references throughout this section, though the most prominent is that of the high priest. This takes us all the way back to Exodus where Aaron was anointed, having been chosen by God, as the first high priest. There are a few important details about the role of the high priest that makes what is stated concerning Jesus in this passage particularly powerful.

The high priest was the only one permitted to enter into the holy of holies. In other words, he was the only one who could commune with God in the fashion that he did. This would only be done once a year on the Day of Atonement. It was here that they would offer sacrifices for the atonement of the sins of the people. Are you starting to see the significance of where Jesus plays into this?

Jesus as our High Priest enters in on our behalf to make atonement with the blood of the lamb, that being His own blood, so that we would be in right relationship with God. Everything had to have been perfect. Man was insufficient. Due to the fact that man had authority and dominion over all creation, that very creation was blemished by the fall. Only the Son of promise was sufficient for the sake of our sins.

Now there were many limitations that the Levitical priesthood suffered that would have limited the work of Jesus. What we see is that Jesus is a priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Now I am sure there is excitement percolating concerning what is being talked about here, but I will opt into what is spoken at the end of this section and revisit the subject when Hebrews does.
10 called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek,” 11 of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.
